Backyard Composting Vermi (Worm) Composting
Composting reduces garbage by as much as 30%
What is Compost? Compost is what's left after the natural degradation of organic matter. Bacteria decompose this matter, producing a soil-like product called "humus". Compost is an all-natural soil amendment that provides nutrients, increases water retention capacity, stabilizes soil temperatures, improves soil texture and aeration capacity and provides resistance to wind and water erosion.
Why Compost?
- Composting can reduce the amount of garbage ending up in a landfill by 30%
- Composting produces a valuable product that you can benefit from right at home
How do I participate? Two Solid Waste Commissions in New Brunswick, the Westmorland-Albert Solid Waste Corporation and the Fundy Regional Solid Waste Commission, currently operate large-scale composting programs for residential garbage. Do-it-yourself or "backyard" composting is also widely popular among New Brunswick residents and some Commissions offer workshops to teach residents how to do it at home.
What do I do with the finished compost? The final product of backyard composting is a nutrient-rich product that can be used in many ways:
- Add it to your garden to improve and condition the soil and provide the necessary nutrients for flower and vegetable growth
- Spread over your lawn or into potted plants to help plant growth and to protect from disease
- Give as a gift to all your gardener friends!
